iphoneonsteroids_small While apple release the iphone update 2.2, you may want to hold on until you see there are no bugs. For those of you, like me, that update to the new version but would like to go back to 2.1. I put together a step by step video so you can do this, check the video below and let me know if it worked for you.

Once you are done it will bring the iphone back to version 2.1. You can use the latest version of itunes to do this. You will also need the 2.1 Firmware which is found below, and  QuickPWN 2.1 so you can activate the 2.1 version once completed.

First download the 2.1 firmware by CLICKING HERE . Save it to a place you will remember then open iTunes, connect your iphone 3G and while pressing the shift key click on the restore button in iTunes. This will bring up a window that will let you look for the firmware you downloaded. You will also need QuickPWN which you can download by CLICKING HERE if the link fails try this one CLICKING HERE

This tutorial video below is for the iPhone 3G, but it will work for the 1st generation iPhone if you use the firmware below.

If you have the First generation iphone (The Old one) then CLICK HERE for the firmware that works on that model. You might also need the bootloaders 3.9 and 4.6 you can download them by clicking on the following links.  3.9 Bootloader   4.6 Bootloader

  1. Excellent, Well done.. it perfectly works. so let me tell the instructions again.
1.Per the Blog instructions, click zip phone and enter recovery mode and then restore iphone to 2.1 and it will restore automatically to 2.1 but after your boots up automatically it will show you your service name but it will be in DFU mode. So all i did was, i went to quickpwn2.1 and jailbreaked it again selecting unlocking option, addcydia and installer and then also i selected baseband of 2.1 which you will get an option and i followed instructions as per the quickpwn app. Now my iphone works perfectly it was earlier.

    **this is for iphone 2G
**After this whole process your phone will be back to new that means if you have backedup your when it was 2.2 then you cannot retrieve your contacts. Unfortunately i lost my notes but luckily i had made a bakup with 2.1 so i retrieved all my contacts.

    Hope this helps,

  8. Dear iphone holders:
Don’t upgrade to firmware 2.2. If you did so, it will not only change your firmware, it will also change the baseband of your iphone. The baseband of iphone in firmware 2.1 is 2.11. Once you upgraded the firmware, the upgrade will automatically change the baseband to 2.28. Using the above method you could still change the firmware to 2.x (x being 0,1) although changing the baseband is not only difficult, but impossible as of right know. What are the effects of the “new” (2.28) baseband? Many people had jailbroken their iphones with quickpawn (pwnage tool) and were using sim adapters (such as turbo sim) which would “unlock” their iphones. After the upgrade of the baseband, those sim adapters are of no use. The phone would be jailbroken using quickpawn; it will have cydia and installer and everything else would be working. The only thing that does not work is the phone (no service)
I hope this would prevent some of you from upgrading to firmware 2.2. If any of you have already upgraded, it will answer your question.

  9. i already upgraded ma iphone 2.2 but it was accidental.with this is the baseband upgraded??? but ma phone is in working is good shape.can u suggest something abt this??

  10. Yeah i have the same problem ! upgraded Modem Firmware to 02.28.00 v2.2

Do you guys think there will ever be a solution ?

  11. I have a huge problem…

  14. I made it but because i don’t have the At&t Sim I can’t make it work . I’m stuck on “insert a Valid Sim” screen. i tried run PwnageTool but it gives me a error when i try the jailbreak on itunes. Do you know whats causing this erro now?

  15. Thank you very much. it worked such great after I had tried so many times , followed your instructions, was able to downgrade from 2.2 to 2.01 .
My question now everything is working except of the phone showing no service although I was using a smart unlock sim to unlock before but after downgrade,
    it is showing no service.
    Thank you very much
    Best Regards

  16. I too have also accidently updated to 2.2 and baseband 2.28.00, to get round this I used Pwnage to jailbreak the phone and also bought a Rebelsim both of which unlocked the phone a treat

I now have the No Service problem despite being in a very good 3G area. This seems a common problem but one which I have not been able to find an answer to, does anyone have any ideas

  17. hi i tried to downgrade my phone from 2.2 version to 2.1 but it doesnt work for me. it never showed me en error message .I bought my iphone 2g used it was jailbroken and unlocked with filmware version 2.1 but i tried to download music from i tunes and i updated the filmware to 2.2 (i didnt know that i dont have to do this ) and after that my iphone is stuck in recovery mode .I tried to do the steps in your website for downgrading but it never showed me an error message .i tried 3-4 times it didnt work for me .maybe because my iphone is stuck in recovery mode.Does anybody know a solution for my problem or at least how to cancel this recovery mode. 19. look once your phone is in recoverymode connected to computer then open quickpwn it will ask you to reset your phone:

hold the power and home(middle button) down untill it powers off
then turn the phone on while quickpwn is open

YOUR PHONE WILL THEN WORK (I HAD THE SAME PROBLEM NOW WORKING FULLY)

    😀

  20. Dear Arimis thanks 4 the instructions and video. I have not tried the process but will do so in a day or two. One thing I noted was that during the whole process your phone was installed with AT&T sim. What happens if u dont have AT&T sim? Will this still work

  21. hey
i cant even get started…when i press shift and restore..(and the 2.1zip is on my desktop) i cant see it..it doesnt give me and option to choose it. i can only choose files ending .ipsw or .ipcc

  22. Hello Aramis.
Is there are any solution to change baseband (2.28), so I can use phone function in my the iPhone 3g, which was succeesfuly downgreated to v2.1 from v2.2?
    Sincerely,
    Igor

  23. Hi
I gave an order on 29 November 2008 at http://www.any-network.com.
But I think they’re cheating, nothing shipped yet, no answer to my question, no answer to phone calls,
    please be patient
If something changes, I’ll let you know.

  24. As per you instructions I downloaded from mentioned links. The whole process worked perfectly. Everybody note two things:-
    1. The site forget to include a link if someone does not have a AT&T sim without which you can not activate your iphone.
    2. After downgrade the “modem firmware” is not downgraded and remains 02.28.00 thus neither of the networks work except AT&T. so you still have a $500 ipod

  25. so please let me understand: if i do the downgrade with the method shown in the video i wont be able anymore to use my iphone as a phone? even if i restore it to 2.2?

  26. ok guys for the italian iphone it works…. no problem with the network but so far i still have the problems i had with the wifi.. thats the reason i wanted to go back to 2.1

  27. Hey tks a lot for the tips, but I am also using a “non-at&t” sim and have the same “no service” problem… anybody has the solution yet? How to downgrade the modem firmware, or whatever??? bye & tks again!!!

  28. Aramis… you’re the man !

It works perfectly fine ! And it helped me get my f****ing bluetooth back on my iphone ! (it couldn’t start with 2.2).
Very easy steps, very clear in your video, and also very quick !
I will come back if I ever have a pb with my operator network as said above (european one: Orange) but for the moment, works fine !!

    Thx so much !

  29. you guys are great man….thanks a lot….it was so easy you know….thank you for making the video on metacafe and help us out with the description about downgrading.
the day i got my iphone i updated it to the 2.2 version coz i didnt know that there was no software unlock for the version 2.2….so i had to downgrade it from 2.2 to 2.1 and i did it so easily….thank you again!
now i can get my iphone software unlocked…..!!
    thanks a lot!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  30. Hi Aramis,

I have the same troubles as most of our friends with an upgrade to 2.2 and now even if I can use my iPhone as an iPod I cannot use as a telephone because I have “no service”.

I found a software called “ZiPhoneGUI – patched by kIREmK” … they say it can dowgrade the baseband to the old one of FM 2.1

I’m not so expert and I’m afraid to try this …

    Can you help me ?

    Thanks

    Alessandro
